Freud’s Mother Wants To Give You a Psychology Scholarship

July 30, 2007 | Hits for this post:1129 |

Got something to say about Freud and his mother? Then studying psychology in college may be for you. Applying for psychology scholarships can ease the financial burden of college.

Students planning to study psychology in college are eligible for general and achievement scholarship dollars, but there are also psychology scholarships specifically for students in this major. Colleges and universities may offer their own psychology scholarship, and some programs may include money for incoming students. Some departments award scholarships once a student is enrolled.

In addition to traditional psychology scholarships, there are also grants that help pay for school or special projects, like research or fellowships.

Many people confuse the work of psychologists with psychiatrists. Psychiatry is a branch of medicine. Doctors of psychiatry help patients with their mental health. This may include therapy sessions or prescribing medicine.

Psychologists, on the other hand, study behavior and mental perceptions. They observe the way humans and animals think and deal with situations, studying relationships, emotion, perception, interaction and cognition.

Lab work is central to the study of psychology. Without his dogs, Pavlov would have been nothing but a man of ideas. Students studying psychology will have the opportunity to form and test their own ideas, and aid in the lab research of other students and professors. Lab work may offer college students other opportunities to earn money, or extra classroom credit, to supplement their psychology scholarship awards. Psychology research work may include observing behavior and thinking patterns of animals and individuals in various settings.

Some of the psychology scholarships offered to incoming students are given by the American Psychological Association. The APA is the world’s largest association of psychologists, boasting 148,000 members, according to the group’s Web site. The headquarters are in Washington, D.C. The group offers good information for psychology students or high school students thinking of entering the field. They have information on careers, accredited college programs, recommended reading as well as a student forum and job search help. The APA also hosts an annual convention.

If you do not receive an APA scholarship do not be disheartened. As noted, there are other means to help pay for your psychology education. Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology students, for example, also gives out psychology scholarships and research grants to college students.
